Workshop Descriptions
Art is not reserved for those who are born with a "natural talent." With a little knowledge and practice, anyone can learn how to make a beautiful mosaic.
Mosaic Portrait Intensive ~ Three days, twenty hours
Details: We will use traditional and non-traditional mosaic
techniques of the student’s choice to understand facial structure,
cross-contoure, highlights, shading, gradation, cast shadow and how to "see" and use color. The
students will learn to “see” things differently with artist tricks that will be
taught as well as discuss: glues, substrate, tesserae and flow of tiles or glass. There will be short demonstrations and a realistic, 11" x 14" mosaic will be
created from your portrait photograph. We will gather for twenty hours with one hour of demonstrations. There will be artist's mosaic work discussed with mosaic samples from ancient to modern times. We will learn about flow of tesserae according to planes in facial structure. We will also discuss what galleries expect , how to frame and show your work professionally and how to price your mosaics. We will also have a gathering at breakfast (included) to chat and get to know each other, if you can make it. I thank my mosaic friends for allowing me to share their work during my demonstrations.
Level: Background in mosaics is helpful, but not necessary
Mosaics for Beginners ~ Six weeks, 12 hours
Details: In this class we will learn about safety, tools, different techniques and bases or substrates for you work. We'll discuss terminologies and where to buy supplies. We'll go over the different types of glues used for different projects and kinds of materials used for mosaics. We'll discuss mosaics of ancient times to modern contemporary artists.
Everyone goes home with a completed mosaic!

I am a student of Carol Shelkin. In fact a beginner to
the finer details of portrait art of any kind. Glass work
in itself is challenging, but then try to create a likeness
within the limits of glass. Yet from the first moment
of her instruction she put everyone at ease and suddenly
all things were possible. Technically she can not be surpassed.
As an educator, her skills in delivery and the encouragement
she gives are exceptionally tuned.

I attended the 3 day Mosiac Portrait class in Charlotte, NC that was taught by Carol Shelkin. Never having done a portrait in mosaic, I was more than nervous, but Carol has a way about her that makes new things easy to comprehend and apply. She also made a point of spending time with each student to give direction, praise and also to help each person "see" with their own eyes what needed to be added or reworked.
